As a teenager I was obsessed with Nancy Spungen after my mother gave me the book “And I Don’t Want To Live This Life”, written by Nancy’s mother Deborah Spungen. I was already a fan of the Sex Pistols, but didn’t know much about Nancy apart from the whole Sid & Nancy thing. So I’m totally excited to see that a film about her, well, documenting the facts and investigating the mystery of what really happened to her that night in the Chelsea Hotel is about to be released.
From the film’s distributors page:
“On October 12th 1978 Nancy Spungen, an ex-prostitute, sometimes stripper and heroin addict, was found dead in a bathroom at the Chelsea Hotel in New York. She also happened to be the girlfriend of the Sex Pistols’ bassist Sid Vicious, who was quickly accused of her murder. Less than 6 months later, he died of a heroin overdose and the case was closed. The death of Sid and Nancy has passed into rock legend and has only added to the controversial and notorious image of the Sex Pistols and punk music. At the request of Sid’s mother, who committed suicide in 1996, rock author and punk expert Alan Parker has devoted himself to discovering Who Killed Nancy? By interviewing 182 people and re-examining NYPD evidence, he reveals what really happened that night in room 100.”
If you haven’t read And I Don’t Want to Live This Life or Sid Vicious: No One is Innocent (which the documentary is based on) I recommend you read them before watching the film!
A friend recently told me about a film that is being made about The Runaways. At first I was excited, but I was told that Kristen Stewart is playing Joan Jett and apparently this is not a good thing (I have never heard of her). Looking at the IMDB page for the movie I see that Dakota Fanning will be playing Cheri Currie, so I am very confused about casting choices, especially seeing that Joan Jett is an executive producer. Before I knew that, I thought it sounded bad, so hopefully Joan Jett will ensure it is a good film. Please Joan Jett, I love you!
