I recently discovered a singer / songwriter by the name of Jenny Owen Youngs, she’s pretty good and if you like Beth Orton, Cat Power, etc. you should most definitely check her out. But that’s not really the point of this. Yesterday I came across a cover of Hot In Here (you know, by Nelly) on her MySpace page! It is essential that everyone go to her page and listen to it now! I love it so much, and not even in an ironic way! Jenny’s version is way better than the original (and yeah I have been known to like some cheesy r&b / pop music) but I probably don’t even need to mention that.
Also, speaking of cover versions of pop songs, did anyone else see Alanis Morisette’s video of My Humps? I totally thought it was fake at first, that someone had found a look-a-like (and sound-a-like?) and recorded it as an April Fools prank. But I guess it turns out Alanis Morisette has a sense of humour! Who knew. Once again, it probably goes without saying, but listening to this made it apparent how ridiculous this song was in the first place. I’m not sure if I should embed the video or not — I only got about half way through it and then had to stop watching! But against my better judgement, here it is:
I just found out today that she’s in a new band (OK, I don’t know how long they’ve been around for, but they are new to me!) called the Old Haunts. I think she plays the drums, and has replaced CJ Phillips who was in Excuse 17. Unfortunately, that’s about all I know! But they have a website, they’re on Kill Rock Stars, and they have a MySpace page.
